Health Care Reform

There are some key questions that are not being asked in the health care reform debate. First and foremost in my mind, is that with the massive deficits and massive debts this country and many states are experiencing right now, and with the state of the economy, why are we even talking about spending money on new programs?

Shouldn’t we be tightening our belts and reducing spending, just like any individual would do during difficult economic times? It simply does not make sense to start a massive new spending spree in the midst of an economic crisis. If too much spending and too much taxation is the problem, how can it also be the answer?

Health care needs to be reformed but I would look to the private sector and our free enterprise system for solutions. Socializing health care will not only do great damage to our health care system but will be much more expensive with fewer services and longer waiting times.

Another important point to make here is that in this country no one is denied care. Everyone has access to health care. Hospitals do not turn people away because they cannot afford to pay.

Other countries with nationalized health care systems do in fact turn people away. Recently Britain’s national health/care system was criticized for ruling that some treatments for breast cancer are too expensive and will no longer be provided. Is this the system we want in America?

Aside from all of this, we have already made over 55 trillion dollars in promises for Social Security, Medicare and much more in promises to the veterans who have fought to keep this country free. There is currently no plan in place to ensure that we have the funding to keep these promises.
